FOR the centennial celebration of the Buhisan Dam next year, the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) of the Cebu City government commissioned a team of architects to design a marker to honor the people behind the project.
A team led by architect Melva Java, a commissioner of CHAC, visited the site to conceptualize the design of the marker.
She said she wants the marker to be modern and relevant to the place.
The Osmeña Waterworks, which is now Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), was the brainchild of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. and was established to provide a potable and stable water supply for Cebu.
The main source of water was the Buhisan Dam, which was constructed in 1911 and inaugurated in February 1912.
Since Buhisan was far from the city, Osmeña Waterworks built a fountain in the city, the Fuente Osmeña, to showcase the piped water system.
Then governor Gen. William Cameron Forbes, who provided the funds for the project, was the guest of honor during the inauguration.
The Buhisan Dam continues to provide water supply to MCWD concessionaires until today.
