MANILA, Philippines—A motorcycle-rider was killed and eight other persons were injured in an accident involving 11 vehicles on the northbound lane of C5 Road in Makati City on Friday afternoon. (In a radio interview, MMDA’s Romel Prado, however, said at least 12 others were injured in the incident, including several children.)
Motorists were advised to avoid the C5 Road at the Makati and Taguig City boundary and find alternate routes as the traffic on both lanes was snarled by the accident, according to Greg Camacho of the Metrobase of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
Joel Waje, also an MMMDA Metrobase offcer, said the tail-end of traffic gridlock extended from where the accident took place up to the South Luzon Expressway.
Traffic also built up along southbound lane, he said, caused by motorists who slowed down to look at what happened.—
Camacho said the pile-up happened at 2:41 p.m. along C5 Road in Barangay (village) East Rembo in Makati, near the Market!Market! mall in Taguig, before the elevated U-turn slot.
An initial report stated that the accident started when a 16-wheel truck hit four motorcycles traveling on the same lane. Other vehicles involved in the collision were sports utility vehicles.
Camacho said a male motorcycle-rider, identified as James Bond Cuaderno, died on the spot after he was pinned under the wheels of the van.
The eight people injured, whose names were not immediately available, were taken to the Ospital ng Makati for treatment.
