CDN claims 2 of top 3 plums in Milo sportswriting contest

Cebu Daily News bagged two of the top three prizes in the sportswriting contest sponsored by Milo in line with the record-breaking Milo Marathon-Cebu eliminations held last Oct. 7 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Editorial Assistant Calvin Cordova copped the second and third prizes for his feature article about a group of around 30 deaf students who competed in the race and for an advancer story about the record field vying in the country’s most attended Milo qualifying race.

Cordova’s feature article entitled “Deaf Runners Rise Above Handicap” chronicles the struggles of deaf students of the First High School for the Hearing Impaired who try to become normal members of mainstream society and prove that like us, they too deserve respect and equal chances to excel in their chosen fields. The story won the second prize.

The story was accompanied by a photo of the smiling students proudly holding their Finisher’s Certificate with their equally proud  coach.

Cordova’s advancer story entitled “Sea of green envelops Cebu City streets today” won third place. He recieved cash and trophy from Milo run Cebu leg organizer Ricky Ballesteros.

Composing this year’s board of judges were Ms. Mia Mateo, Mass Communications professor at the Saint Theresa’s College; Dr. Reynaldo Caturza, Masscom professor at Cebu Normal University and Dr. Rosalinda Quijada, Consultant DepEd Cebu City and former English consultant of DepEd Region 7.

Meanwhile, sports correspondent Dale Rosal also won second place in the sportswriting contest of the Milo Little Olympics Regional Finals held last month for his story “UC restores order in Milo meet.” /RCG
