CEBU CITY—The city government suspended on Monday the construction of a 10-story building on the province-owned lot in Barangay Apas, this city after a portion of the wall of the old city jail collapsed on Sunday.
A portion of the 20-meter high wall of the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center collapsed, damaging five houses in an adjacent area, according to Ramil Ayuman, chief of Apas village.
But it prompted the city government to order the suspension of the construction of a building in the area, according to Alvin Santillana.
The 10-story building is being put up by realty firm Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI) on a portion the 1.2-hectare lot owned by the Cebu provincial government.
In a statement, FLI said only a small portion of the old jail wall collapsed “due to massive rainfall that softened the soil foundation of the existing perimeter wall.”
