Today, Oct. 29, is the 92nd birth anniversary of Fidela “Tiya Dely” Mendoza-Magpayo, known as the “First Lady of Philippine Radio.” Born in 1920 in Malate, Manila, she was a radio newscaster, commentator, dramatist, producer, announcer, singer and on-air counselor. She was awarded the Pama-As Gintong Bai (Centennial Woman) Award by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, among others. She passed away on Sept. 1, 2008, after suffering a stroke.
