UP student wins ‘Battle of the Brains’

A second year Political Science student from the University of the Philippines Cebu College won first place in the 12th inter-school Banggaan sa Kinaadman (Battle of the Brains) held July 22 at the Department of Education Conference Hall in Cebu City.

Jun Marr Denila bested the 23 other contestants from eight different universities and colleges in Cebu City in the college category. Denila, a first time contestant in Banggaan sa Kinaadman was coached by Assistant Professor Mae Claire Jabines.

Tobey Lumingkit from the University of San Jose Recoletos placed second and Jobeth Jennifer Tampus from Cebu Institute of Technology-University, third.

In the high school category, Elloisa Miguel Coca of Pit-os National High School garnered first place among the 135 other contestants. She was followed by second placer Joanna Sinco from Bethany Christian School, and third placer Ma. Mikaela Algaricon from the University of San Carlos-South Campus.

The participants were bombarded with questions on current events, history, science, mathematics and politics.

The ten top scorers of the preliminary round proceeded to the semi-final round where the top three scorers battled for the final round.

Contestants in both categoeis who garnered the fourth to tenth places received P1,000 with plaques. The first, second and third placers were given P6,000, P4,000 and P3,000, also with plaques.

The Cebu City government, through the Cebu City Youth Development Commission, presented the event.
