Mandaue police are investigating a 22-year-old woman for the death of her newborn daughter.
Kristina Enriquez said the death of her 19-day-old baby Jourgina was accidental.
She said she fell asleep while breastfeeding her baby around 1 a.m. yesterday and woke up to find herself laying atop the infant.
The mother said that when she saw blood coming out the baby’s nose, she ran out the house with the child to seek the help of neighbors, said Insp. Ramil Morpos, deputy chief of Mandaue City police’s Investigation and Detection Management Branch.
The baby was brought to the South General Hospital where she was declared dead by Dr. Mary Jane Abao.
Police said the woman’s live-in partner stays in Medellin town, north Cebu with their 5-year-old daughter.
Scratches were found on the baby’s left cheek as well as the forehead of the mother.
Morpos said the mother refused to have an autopsy because she didn’t want the baby cut up.
Enriquez accompanied the police to their house and demonstrated how the incident happened.
Morpos said a charge of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide will be filed against the mother./CORRESPONDENT JUCELL MARIE P. CUYOS
