OSLO–Norway’s state prosecutor will demand an exceptional extension of the custody period to eight weeks for the suspect in last week’s deadly twin attacks, the Oslo tribunal said Monday.
“The prosecutor (Christian Hatlo) will ask for eight weeks of custody for Anders Behring Breivik,” the court said in a statement.
“The prosecutor will also request for closed doors during the hearing,” the statement, in reference to Breivik’s request for a public hearing.
The maximum renewable custody period is usually four weeks in Norway but police spokeswoman Viola Bjelland said it could be doubled in light of the exceptional nature of the case.
Breivik is so far the only suspect in the bomb and shooting attacks that killed at least 93 people on Friday.
The 32-year-old has admitted to the killing and said he carried out the attacks — the worst in Norway’s post-war history — alone.
He is due to appear before a judge for the first time at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT).
