They couldn’t go in through the door so they went in through the roof.
Burglars made off with P2 million worth of valuables from a jewelry shop found inside a supermarket complex in Cubao, Quezon City, after they broke into the establishment through a hole in the roof.
According to investigators, the robbery happened after Puregold supermarket closed its doors at 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Although a security guard is posed outside the building at night, no one noticed anything unusual until at 7 a.m. Thursday when security personnel spotted a hole on the roof, leading to the discovery of the break-in.
“There was an air duct on the roof which they dismantled [with a steel saw and screw drivers] to gain entry,” said case investigator Senior Police Officer 1 Cristituto Zaldarriaga.
After boring holes in the ceiling to get into the shopping complex, the burglars made their way to Polaris jewelry shop which was located in the basement.
Based on the footage taken by a closed circuit television camera inside the establishment, two men wearing bonnets broke into the jewelry shop by sawing off the lock on the door.
They then destroyed the vault, which contained P13,000 in cash and around P2 million worth of jewelry, according to Zaldarriaga.
The investigator learned that the jewelry in the shop is displayed on a glass shelf during the day and hidden inside a vault at night.
On their way out of the shop, the robbers tried but failed to destroy an automated teller machine, Zaldarriaga said. They then exited also through the roof.
