Cesafi champ Cobras rout Negros State College of agriculture; Jaguars nip USLS

The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions Southwestern University Cobras put on a show as they walloped the Negros State College of Agriculture, 107-58, in the ongoing 17th Sandugo-University Games in Bacolod City.

Also, fellow Cebu team University of San Jose-Recoletos logged its second win in three games after beating the University of St. La Salle, 74-66.

The newly crowned Cesafi champions Cobras barely broke a sweat in their early morning encounter as they leaned on the prolific three-point sniping of Mythical Five guard Monbert Arong, who buried seven three-point shots and finished with 28 points without playing a single second in the fourth period.

Arong was supported by the team’s two Cameroonian imports Justin Aboude and Ben Mbala, who combined for 42 points.

The win hiked SWU’s record to 2-0 (win-loss) in the group stage. They finish their stint in the eliminations with a match against reigning UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks and the rest of the National University Bulldogs.

Parks suited up for NU for the first time in this tournament yesterday in an 80-56 win over the West Negros University Mustangs. He scored just two points and was content to be a facilitator in the team’s lopsided win, their third in as many games.

According to assistant coach Rocky Alcoseba, the loser of that match will take on the top seed of the other group that is being led by another UAAP squad the University of the East Red Warriors featuring the slam-dunking 6-foot-8 Cameroonian JM Arafat, who is eligible to play for UE in the 2014 UAAP season.

In men’s volleyball action, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Spiking Jaguars took care of the Holy Cross of Davao, 25-23, 25-17, 25-17.
