BACOLOD CITY, Philippines –A businessman was killed after he was repeatedly shot while he was inside his vehicle by a lone gunman Saturday night, police said.
Johnny Chua, 63, a lawyer and owner of Eastview Hotel and Prenda Negrense, suffered a fatal wound on the right side of his body, said Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, Bacolod police chief.
De La Paz said the motive in the killing might be personal because the gunman, he said, appeared to have been waiting for Chua to pass by.
De La Paz organized Special Investigation Task Force Chua to investigate the killing.
The police said Chua and his son, Brent, 24, came from Prenda Negrense in downtown Bacolod and were heading home to Capitolville Subdivision about 6 p.m. Saturday.
The two boarded the Isuzu Altiera driven by Brent. Upon reaching the intersection on Burgos Street in Barangay 19, Brent was forced to slow down the vehicle due to the traffic.
An unidentified man then approached the passenger front seat where Chua was sitting and fired four times.
Brent rushed his father to the Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital but he was pronounced dead a few minutes later, De la Paz said.
A pair of surgical gloves was recovered from the crime scene, a police report said.
