THE country’s most skiled collegiate weightlifters will converge here in Cebu as the National Students Weightlifting Championship unwraps on Oct. 27 at the Cebu City Sports Center.
This was finalized in a recent meeting attended by members of the organizing committee led by Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, tournament director Danny Catingub, Jess Himotas of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, tournament adviser Graham Lim and chairman of the organizing committee, Atty. Baldomero Estenzo.
This tournament represents a good avenue for athletes to strut their stuff as the stellar ones will get the chance to represent the country in the 27th Summer Univesiade in Russia next year.
“We have so many athletes in the CESAFI that can be developed to become skilled weightlifters,” said Estenzo in a statement to the press. “Our member schools such as University of San Carlos, University of Visayas, San Jose Recoletos, University of Cebu and others can be a major source. We are also sending invitations to schools from the northern part of the country which have solid program for weightlifting that can develop talents for local and international competitions,” he added.
The University of the East already confirmed its participation in the tournament. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
