6 hurt by lightning

DIGOS CITY, Philippines—Six people were rushed to a government hospital here due to minor burns after they were hit by lightning in Barangay Coronon, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur on Monday evening, the police said Tuesday.

Senior Superintendent Ronaldo Llanera, provincial police director, identified the victims as Kokoy Mohammad, 23; Nonito Cayoga, 22; Dan Bautista, 22; BenJack Dalios, 14; Allan Enoc, 19; and Joel Cayoga, 34; all residents of Barangay Coronon.

Llanera said the victims were fishing at the beach around 8:30 p.m. when it rained hard, causing them to seek cover under a coconut tree. Lightning struck the tree after a few minutes.

Nonito Cayoga, who was rushed along with the five other victims to the Davao del Sur provincial hospital here, told the Inquirer he was lifted off the ground when the lightning struck.
