Pa of Manila cop shot dead in Tondo

MANILA, Philippines—Several days after a Manila policeman was killed, the father of another policeman who assisted in the case of his slain colleague, was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding assailants in Tondo, Manila, on Monday morning.

Police identified the victim as Roger Maniquis, 68, a councilman of Barangay 75, Sta. Maria, in Tondo, Manila. He is also the father of Police Officer 2 Rommel Maniquis of the Manila Police District-District Police Intelligence Operations Unit.

Police Officer 3 Rodel Benitez of the MPD homicide section said Maniquis was talking with his wife, Carmencita, outside their house in Sta. Maria when one of two men on board a black motorcycle shot the victim at around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

“The wife said they were talking about their plans for the coming holiday (All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day) when one of the riding-in-tandem suspects alighted and, without saying a word, shot the victim. The gunman immediately boarded the motorcycle and escaped,” Benitez said.

The getaway vehicle, he said, had no license plates.

The victim, who sustained gunshot wounds in the head and body, died while undergoing treatment at the Mary Johnston Hospital in Tondo, the police report said.

Two slugs were found at the crime scene, the report added.

PO2 Maniquis had assisted in the arrest of Antonio Lalu, one of the so-called riding-in-tandem suspects in the killing of PO1 Ryan Bagadiong of Ermita station over a week ago, the police said.

Bagadiong was shot dead on October 5 by assailants after he flagged them down for allegedly going against the flow of traffic in Ermita.

Lalu was killed on October 11 while accompanying the police in a weapon recovery operation while his companion, Florencio Gaevican Jr., died of gunshot wounds fired by Bagadiong.

When Benitez was asked if there was any connection between the killing of Bagadiong and the older Maniquis, he said: “The case is still under investigation.”
