July 25 is the start of National Diabetes Awareness Week, which the country marks every last week of July by virtue of Proclamation No. 213, which was signed by former President Fidel V. Ramos in July 1993. The move was aimed at promoting awareness of diabetes through early detection and various educational programs. As of 2009, nearly 4.7 million Filipinos suffer from diabetes.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
