SC junks petitions on validity of Corona impeach raps

MANILA, Philippines—The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions questioning the validity of the impeachment complaint against former chief justice Renato Corona.

In a three page resolution, the high court said there is no need to discuss the constitutional issues on the legality of the signatures of the congressmen who supported Corona’s impeachment, saying the trial had been concluded with Corona’s removal as chief magistrate.

“Indeed, the recent turn of events, including the appointment of a new chief justice, has rendered the petitions before us moot,” the high court ruling said.

The five dismissed petitions were filed by lawyers Vladimir Cabigao, Vicente Millora and Oliver Lozano of the Lawyers League for a Better Philippines, Danilo Lihaylihay, Rev. Bernardo Magno, former Assemblyman Homobono Adaza, Herman Laurel, Rodolfo Salandanan and lawyer Allan Paguia.
