MANILA, Philippines—Two people died from drowning after being carried away by strong waves in the island of Boracay early Wednesday, police said.

Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., Region VI police director, said the incident occurred in front of the La Carmela Resort in Boracay, Malay town, Aklan around 8:43 a.m., killing victims identified as Gino Socito, 20, of Pasig City; and one Dabie Pedrosa of Makato Aklan.

Cruz said initial reports showed that Socito, who is a Hotel and Restaurant Management student of Arellano University, was at the province for an educational trip.

Pedrosa tried to save Socito, but was likewise carried away by the strong current and drowned, he said.

Socito’s schoolmates identified as Matthew Yambao, Francis Harina and Jay Ar Apostol, on the other hand, were transferred to Kalibo for medical treatment, Cruz said.
