Guadalupe families displaced by floods

ABOUT P100-million worth of flood and drainage improvement projects are targeted for completion in Cebu City before the year ends.

Mayor Michael Rama said this amid reports that 176 families in barangay Guadalupe were displaced after their houses were flooded last Wednesday afternoon.

Most flood victims blame the upland Monterazzas de Cebu development for aggravating the flood.

Guadalupe barangay captain Michael Gacasan said he ordered three families living near Monterazzas water detention pond to vacate their homes due to continuous rains on Thursday night.

Gacasan said the families spent the night at the barangay hall. Rep. Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City’s south district gave P1,500 as financial assistance to the three families.

Tents were given by City Hall. Gacasan said financial aid will be released to the other families affected by flooding.

“But the amount of assistance will be determined after I speak with Monterazzas officials because they have promised to help the affected families,” Gacasan told Cebu Daily News.

In yesterday’s Cebu City Development Council meeting, Rama said the city government was implementing flood control and drainage improvement projects.

He told a a noontime press conference that he wanted the Monterazzas project revisited.

He said he wants updates on the project, which the city earlier ordered suspended in 2009 due to lack of flood mitigation measures. Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac
