Red Bull’s Calderon takes lead
Red Bull Supreme’s Jette Calderon pushed ahead in the exciting race for Karter of the Year honors as he won the title in the KT 100 Expert, beating the fancied Juan Antonio “Tonyo” Carcel in the final heat in the sixth leg of the 2012 Kartzone Superkart Series last weekend at the Kartzone Track in brgy. Panagdait.
The prodigious Calderon, an ace racer from the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, finished strong as he took the checkered flag in last race of the day, finishing the 18-lap race with a time of 10 minutes, 35.443 seconds. He beat Joseph Rojo, who was three seconds behind and Sean Velasco, who finished in third place.
Carcel, the two-sport star from PAREF-Springdale, actually had the pole position after dominating the first heat and the pre-final race. However, he had a disastrous showing in the final heat and finished in fourth place with a time of 10:55.414.
Calderon came away with a leg total of 44 points to surge ahead in the point standings in their class with 240. Carcel continues to be in hot pursuit as his 37-point total in the sixth leg gave him a total of 237 points. In far third place is Rojo, with 223.
The sixth leg also saw karters virtually bag the titles in their respective classes starting with Rap-Rap Gutierrez, who sealed the SQ Cadet crown with his total of 266 points.
Also winning the overall titles were Clive Fermin in the Honda Expert after he logged in a total of 271 points, and Panpan Reroma, who snatched the KT Masters title after accumulating 292 points.
