MANILA, Philippines—A man and a woman were stabbed to death early Sunday after they defended the man’s son from knife-wielding attackers in Quezon City.

Leonila Alla Lugan, 43, and her 43-year-old neighbor Edwin Estacio, both of Dinorado Street, Sitio (subvillage) Palayan in Barangay (village) Payatas A, were declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Fairview General Hospital. Lugan died from a single stab wound in the left side of the body while Estacio sustained seven knife wounds in different parts of the body.

Senior Police Officer 1 Johnny Mahilum, of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU), said that the attacks happened around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, along Dinorado Street in Barangay (village) Payatas A.

Mahilum said that before the stabbing, Mark Julius figured in a fistfight with a neighbor identified only as “Kim.” Estacio had approached the combatants to pacify them but before he could draw near, Kim ran into his home to hide and trailed by Mark Julius.

Estacio followed them and ran into his son who was staggering out of the house with stab wounds in the body pursued by a knife-wielding man identified as Danny. Seeing Estacio, Danny turned on him and started attacking him with the knife while the wounded Mark Julius slipped away.

Lugan saw the assault on Estacio and tried to stop Danny but the suspect knifed her in response before fleeing with Kim. The wounded victims were taken by their neighbors to the nearest hospital but efforts to save the older Estacio and Lugan proved futile.
