30 hurt as bus falls into gully in Quezon

LUCENA CITY, Philippines—A bus plunged into a 10-foot-deep gully along the Bondoc Peninsula highway in General Luna, Quezon, on Wednesday, injuring 30 passengers, police said.

PO2 Archival Almonte, General Luna police investigator, said the RR Bus was traversing the village of Bacong Ilaya toward the town of Catanauan at around 4:20 p.m. when its left front suspension springs broke.

The driver, Ricardo Minggay, lost control of the  vehicle, which then swung off the road and fell into the gully at the left side of the road, police said.

Villagers and passing motorists rescued the passengers, most of whom suffered slight injuries, and rushed them to the Bondoc Peninsula district hospital in Catanauan for treatment.

Investigators found out that the driver had no valid driver’s license and detained him at the Catanauan police jail, said Almonte.
