MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon “Lawin” (international name Jelawat) continued to gain more strength as it moved northward, the state weather bureau said Monday.
“Lawin” was last seen 405 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up 220 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.
It was moving north northwest at 7kph.
“Lawin” had been classified by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center as a super typhoon.
“Lawin” was forecast to be 640 km East of Infanta, Quezon by Tuesday morning;
530 km East of Tuguegarao City by Wednesday morning; and 430 km East of Calayan Island by Thursday morning.
Despite its strength, all storm signals were lifted by Pagasa.
