MANILA, Philippines – Aside from Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, only one incumbent Supreme Court Associate Justice joined her on Monday’s flag ceremony.

Associate Justice Jose Perez, together with retired Supreme Court Associate Justices Adolf Azcuña and Regino Hermosisima joined the flag rites.

Despite the absence of the other Associate Justices, Sereno was joined in by students from St. Scholastica Manila’s Communication Society, who expressed their support for her leadership.

“Today, with a new leadership in the Supreme Court after democratic processes have been observed, our country is privileged to have its first female Chief Justice, Hon. Maria Lourdes P. A. Sereno… Let us remember that the Supreme Court is the last bastion of justice and freedom,” a representative of the group said in a statement.

“Lessons of the past,” the statement said, should be remembered.

“Let us do our part and work and pray for a better future,” it added.
