YOUTH participation is necessary to promote heritage awareness on Cebu’s culture and history.
“As what Dr. Jose Rizal had said, the youth is the hope of the nation. To realize this, we should make the youth aware of their role in preserving our culture and heritage,” said Karl Hegel Damayo, Exhibitions and Museum Collections officer of Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.’s (RAFI) Casa Gorordo Museum.
During the Sept. 15 episode of RAFI’s radio program called Pagtuki, Damayo stressed that knowing one’s culture is the first step towards better community.
“Pagtuki” is aired over dyLA every Saturday at 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
“The more we know our culture and heritage, the more we are encouraged to contribute to community development,” he added.
Max Capatan, a History student from University of San Carlos (USC), said that contrary to people’s perception, today’s youth are more interested of the past.
“As I study Cebuano culture, l learned that food, celebrations, religion and language are part of cultural identity. The values, customs, and the histories are also an important part of our culture,” he said.
On Sept. 29, RAFI’s Culture and Heritage unit will hold the fourth run of its Kabataan, Kultura, Kabilin to expand the youth’s knowledge on culture by visiting local museums and heritage sites.
