Dolphin found dead

ORMOC CITY—A baby spinner dolphin was found dead in the waters off Barangay Danhug on Saturday evening, authorities said.

The dolphin didn’t have wounds or signs of physical abuse, said Irish Belmonte, City Agricultural Office’s Resource Enhancement Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Animal Production and Fisheries Division head.

He said the dolphin, a male and still a baby, may have died of depression after he was separated from his mother. She added she believed the dolphin may have been already dead when it drifted to shore.

The dolphin was found by Danhug tanod (watchman) Rogelio Enot about 6 p.m. on Saturday and was turned over to the City Quarantine Office.

The dolphin weighed at least three kilograms, was 2 feet and 7 inches long and had very small teeth. It was buried in Barangay Ipil on Sunday morning.

This was the third dolphin found dead in Ormoc and the second in Barangay Danhug, this year. Elvie Roa, Inquirer Visayas
