AFTER SEEING their 10-year streak of making it to the finals broken last year, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers are back in it as they clinched the first berth in the championship series with an exciting 84-76 win over the Southwestern University Cobras in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Lancers failed to make it to the finals last year after being denied by the Cobras in the semifinals.
UV did not forget that and paid SWU back yesterday as it used the shotmaking of Jerome Silva and the contributions of Chris Perolino in the fourth period to hack out its second win in as many games in the single round-robin semifinals.
In the juniors division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles are also back in the finals for the third year in a row as they won their second straight game in the semis with a 70-49 thrashing of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens.
Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw went on a three-point shooting spree and finished with 21 points to lead the Eagles.
The reigning champions UV Baby Lancers also kept their title defense alive with a 71-57 win over the Cebu Eastern College Dragons. League MVP Paul Desiderio led UV with 27 points.
In the other seniors semis game, the defending champions University of Cebu Webmasters remained in the hunt for the other ticket to the finals with a 72-64 victory over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars.
