Crack teams from CIDG to probe alleged PNP equipment scams
MANILA, Philippines – Two investigative teams culled from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) have been set up to look into the alleged procurement anomalies of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
CIDG chief Director Samuel Pagdilao Jr. said he ordered the two teams to look into the PNP purchase of mismatched rubber boats and engines, patrol craft, and second-hand helicopters.
He added that PNP chief Director General Raul Bacalzo had tasked the CIDG to determine the criminal liability of officers involved in these transactions.
Pagdilao disclosed that CIDG deputy director for administration Chief Superintendent Benito was assigned to head the investigation on the rubber boats and outboard motor engines, and the patrol craft, while CIDG deputy director for operations Senior Superintendent Chris Laxa, will lead the probe into the two second-hand helicopters.
“If evidence warrants, then we’ll file the appropriate charges,” Pagdilao said.
Pagdilao said that Laxa’s team have started compiling documents on the helicopters, and will be inviting officers involved in the transaction. He added that they have sent a letter to the manufacturer to shed light on the ownership of the helicopters before these were bought by the PNP.
Pagdilao said they would not be pinpoint accountability on the purchases until they finished. “We have to finish our investigation first. We are on the first stage (and) we are collating all the documents. We will also have the documents authenticated,” said the CIDG chief.
“These cases must be able to stand up in court,” Pagdilao stressed.
