Staying strong and living on” is the shout of Cebu Alliance of Mass Communication Students (CAMMS) starting this year.
“They’ve started well, they were able to partner with GMA for iWitness and ABS-CBN for Campus Patrol,” said CAMMS founding adviser Bienvenido Fernandez.
On the opening of its sixth year, the organization conducted a lot of activities.
CAMMS, in collaboration with GMA, held the showing of iWitness documentaries entitled iDocufest last July 8 at SM Cinema.
Journalists Howie Severino, Sandra Aguinaldo, Jay Taruc and Kara David from GMA came here to Cebu to enlighten students and answer their questions regarding documentaries, among others.
Last Aug. 17, the organization held their fourth annual activity CAMMS Got Talent, where students from various schools showcased their talents in singing, dancing and comical skits.
The activity, according to CAMMS president Annie Fe Perez, said this year’s CAMMS Got Talent had a twist.
“Usually, the activity only allows one presentation per school so all schools can perform in one afternoon with Campus Patrol. But this year, we decided to separate the CAMMS Got Talent from the Campus Patrol to feature singing, dancing and comical skits.
On Aug. 24, the yearly Campus Patrol contest was held in Cebu Normal University, in collaboration with ABS-CBN TV Patrol Central Visayas, where participants learned what is it like to be a reporter.
Students dropped by ABS-CBN compound in barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City as early as 6 a.m. to pick their topic before going to the field to look for news stories related to the topic and broadcast it on stage afternoon on the same day.
Campus Patrol serves as a talent pool for the television network. The station is on the lookout for potential reporters.
“We aim to organize activities for Mass Communication students to prepare them for future employment in the media industry,” said Perez.
CAMMS founding adviser Fernandez said the alliance this year has become stronger compared to last year.
“Last year, CAMMS was not doing well because the officers were holding positions in their schools and there were time conflicts. This year, with Annie Fe as president and Justine Carmel Dakay as vice president who is not holding other position in school, CAMMS has indeed been doing well,” Fernandez said.
CAMMS has lined up activities for this school year, including photography workshop with Canon and Colours Studio from Sept. 13 to Sept. 15.
In line with the Press Freedom Week, the group will also hold online journalism workshop, simultaneous street photography workshop and the screening of Lino Brocka films with Tudla Productions on Sept. 18.
And on October, the group will make a music video with IJM Music Records.
Activities like acquaintance party and CAMMS WelCAMMs You membership program will be held next semester.
Hopefully, CAMMS would also launch its own radio program titled CammsTV with Radyo Asenso as the official radio station and stage the MassCommedya next semester. /UP Masscom student Chelzee Salera
