UV booters gain Cesafi lead

Lancers share top spot in tertiary competition with University of San Jose-Recoletos

The University of the Visayas (UV) took over the top spot after beating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 2-1, in yesterday’s resumption of the tertiary football battle of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at the football field of the Cebu City Sports Center.

The win allowed the Lancers to snatch the leaderpost from the University of Cebu (UC), which bowed to defending champion University of San Carlos (USC), 1-2, in the second match.

UV is not alone at the top as it shares the position with the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R). Both teams tote a one win, one draw record equivalent to four points.

UC dropped to second place also with four points with a record of 1-1-1 (win-loss-draw).  The defending champion USC is at third place with three points off a one win, one loss record.

The 2011 first runner-up USPF holds up the rear with just one point. USPF remains to be the only team winless in the elimination round.

In the first match between UV and USPF, the Lancers tallied the first goal via John Michael Gomora in the 55th minute.

USPF’s Albert Tejas scored the equalizer in the 70th minute but the Panthers was not able to stop the GreenBooters from taking the match with a last minute goal from Albert Torepalma.

USPF will be missing the services of Aljhun Armamento after he picked up a red card for violent conduct.

In the game between USC and UC, Karl Vincent Arcenas set the pace for the defending champions with a goal in the 17th minute.

This was followed by teammate Chris Deen Agot who scored his goal in the 35th minute.

UC managed to break the ice in the 38th minute via Christian Vasquez’s efforts. But neither  team was able to score again in the second half.
