5 missing, 400 families flee homes due to flashfloods in Sarangani town

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – At least five persons were reported missing while 400 families or 2,000 individuals were displaced when a flashflood hit two barangay (villages) in Malungon town in Sarangani Province on Saturday.

Malungon Mayor Reynaldo Constantion said the overflowing of the Tinagacan River had flooded the villages of Malandag and Datal Tampal on Saturday night.

As the floodwater rose, some residents were seen on top of roofs and trees.

As of Sunday morning, water had subsided, showing the extent of damage to properties.

Constantion said the Kiblat Bridge, which has connected most villages in Malungon, was damaged.

Some of the evacuees are staying in the village gymnasium while some are with relatives.

On Sunday morning, most of the evacuees have started to return to their homes.
