THE Cebu Archdiocese sponsored a recollection to members of the Cebu media community in fulfillment of its duty to “provide pastoral guidance.”
But church leaders clarified this activity is not a way to enforce religion over media as they understand the independent role of the fourth estate.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma led the activity together with Rome-based Monsignor Joseph Tan.
Introspection and selflessness were emphasized by both Palma and Tan amid the fast-paced life of members of the media.
“The Cebu scene is different from other countries, where church and media are usually adversarial with each other,” Tan said.
“I honestly believe that in Cebu, we have successfully realized in our little ways, how the church has regarded media as an institution,” he added.
Apart from inspirational sharing done by both church leaders, a Eucharistic celebration and an open forum highlighted the event.
As agreed by journalists who participated in the exercise and church leaders, another recollection will be held before the observance of the Holy Week and every September./Correspondent Jessa J. Agua
