SOME of Cebu’s best word wizards will clash today in the Visayas qualifying tournament for the 2012 World Youth Scrabble Championships (WYSC) at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Scrabble players from the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and the University of the Visayas (UV) are among the top contenders in this tournament, organized by the Cebu Scrabble Association in coordination with the National Scrabble Association of the Philippines. It is fully supported by the Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama.
Age qualification cut-off date for participants is Jan. 1, 1995.
The top four placers in the qualifying event will earn a seat to the Philippine Youth Scrabble Team that will compete in the WYSC in London this December.
One Cebuano, Natalie Cabaluna, is already in the national team.
The tournament will kick off at 8:30 a.m. today. CSA president Roger Abella and former WYSC contender Teodoro Martus Jr. will supervise the tournament. / CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
