Science teachers in public and private elementary and secondary schools will get special training this month on new trends in teaching science and technology to prepare them for the new curriculum under the Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K to 12) program.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has urged science teachers to participate in the seminar workshop  set from September 26 to 30 at the Ecotech Center in Lahug, Cebu City, as part of the 2012 National Science Club Month celebration this month.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the workshop “will introduce new trends in science and technology, teaching and how (such knowledge) can find application in real life situations.”

The training will also focus on enhancing the knowledge and strategies of science mentors using the spiral progression scheme, Luistro said, adding that a stronger focus on science education was one of the goals of the K to 12 program which was  started this year.

Under the K to 12 program, two years have been added to high school to complete a 12-year basic education cycle observed in many other countries. Dona Z. Pazzibugan
