Hundreds of residents in Southern Leyte evacuated

MAASIN CITY – Hundreds of residents in Southern Leyte have been evacuated due to tsunami warnings on Friday night, according to officials.

Mayor Roberto Loquinto of Anahawan town said residents in all nine barangays along the coastal areas in their town have been evacuated.

In St. Bernard town, municipal councilor Santiago Santiago said at least 300 residents have been transferred to the municipal hall.

The people were calm and instructions for the evacuation were being transmitted to coastal barangays through a public address system at the municipal hall, said Santiago.

“We always have earthquakes here but this is the first time I felt one this strong. Glasses in my bar were broken,” Santiago said.
