Yaw-Yan Ardigma Cebu’s Brooks triumphs in CdO

Yaw-Yan Ardigma Cebu Top Team’s heavyweight fighter Cris Marvyn “Lindol” Thompson-Brooks finally logged a victory on the ring as he defeated Pythons Pit Davao’s Gygz Ocampo via a first-round referee stoppage in last Saturday’s undercard of the Mindanao Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts’ The Proving Ground-Warshock at the Liceo de Cagayan University gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

Brooks, a cebu-based MMA fighter from Great Britain, captured his first victory in the ring after his first bout was won by default.

Brooks was disappointed with the last-minute withdrawal of his Boholano opponent in last July’s Ground and Pound VI:Invincible in Cebu City, which awarded him a default victory.

But this time, Brooks needed to work hard to score a win. He was almost forced to submission by Ocampo after he got hit hard and was taken down. An armbar by Ocampo almost led to a loss, but Brooks managed escape Ocampo and dropped elbow strikes on his foe. Those hits caused a huge cut in the eyebrow and lip of Ocampo midway in the first round. This forced the referee to stop the fight.

Meanwhile, Brooks’ teammate, Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) Visayas pinweight challenger Geronimo “daredevil” Etac, was not as lucky as as he was caught by an armlock in the first round by Manila’s Rabin Catalan of Tricks MMA team.

Etac’s superior striking was very effective in the earlier part of the match but Catalan’s mastery in grappling and jiu-jitsu caught Etac offguard, leading to the right armlock.

Yawyan Ardigma Martial Arts Federation founder and CEO Master Benigno “Ekin” Caniga Jr. said he is planning to pit Etac in SOMA Kick Boxing Club’s MMA fight card this October in Cordova town in Mactan Island, Cebu.

Two more Cebuanos also weren’t able to log wins in the City of Golden Friendship as Johnjier “Dangerous” Torbiso was beaten by Rocky Tune Batolbatol of MUMMA in their rematch.

Rambo Galleto of the Malawi Fighting System Cebu was also beaten by local bet Israel Gomez after a successful rear naked choke.

Torbiso was also beaten by Batolbatol in their first encounter last July 14 in the co-main event of the Ground and Pound VI: Invincible.
