Robredo’s values as public servant topic in schools on Tuesday–DepEd

MANILA, Philippines–All elementary and high schools will discuss in class the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo’s brand of public service on Aug. 28, a Tuesday, the day he is laid to rest in his hometown of Naga City.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro has instructed all elementary and high schools to give a special lesson about Robredo during their Araling Panlipunan or their Values Education subject.

The special module was developed by the Department of Education Region 5 (Bicol), where Robredo served as Naga City mayor for 19 years.

Robredo served as chief of the Department of the Interior and Local Government since President Benigno Aquino III assumed office in June 2010 before the chartered light plane carrying him from Cebu to Naga crashed in waters off Masbate City on Aug. 18.

“It is important for our students to understand why the whole nation is mourning the loss of Sec Jesse. There is much to learn about his life, his principles, his commitment to public service and his dedication to the common good,” Luistro said.

“If our students recognize honest and dedicated public servants as the norm rather than the exception, this will help accelerate the process of social transformation, then Sec(retary) Jesse would not have died in vain,” he added.
