Kapwa treats children with cancer

Believing that psychosocial activity is an important healing process among children with cancer, the Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation Inc. – Cebu chapter conducted its first bi-annual support group activity for its “Pangga-a Sab Ko” beneficiaries.

Children who are undergoing chemotherapy, and the cancer survivors as well as their parents participated in the activities prepared by the volunteer psychologists from the Association for Advancement of Humanistic Psychology (AAHP).

The cosplayers from the Gathering of Enthusiastic Cebuano Cosplayers (Geccos) facilitated the games, adding more fun to the event.

The beneficiaries who celebrated their birthdays from January to June were also given gifts.

Dance and song numbers were presented by the children and some mothers.

“Pangga-a Sab Ko” program provides medical and psychosocial support to children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the blood which is curable when regular treatment is administered.

Support group sessions are conducted twice a year to provide opportunities for patients and their families to participate in learning activities and therapeutic sessions as well as celebrate the gift of life. Research shows that people who receive social support, in addition to the treatment can have longer and less anxiety-laden lives.

The whole day activity held last July 7 at the Pacific Cebu Resort was supported by Pacific Cebu Resort, Ceres Bus Liner, Geccos, Austine Development Corp. and AAHP.

The program is sustained through the support of its benefactors, JEG Development Corporation, Alpa Foundation, New Pagcor, SM City Cebu, GMA Network Inc., International Pharmaceuticals Inc., Simon Enterprises, Cebu City government, Department of Education, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. and Senator Vicente Sotto III.
