AROUND 4,000 runners have already enlisted for tomorrow’s 7th University Run at the Cebu Doctors’ University campus at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City).
This year’s edition of the race set a new record for participants as it surpassed last year’s number of 3,000 runners.
With the great response from the Cebuano running community, running patron and organizer Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III is very thankful that his race gathered this much registrants despite going head-to-head with another running event in Cebu City tomorrow, which is the Timex Run starting at Osmeña Boulevard.
“It’s very overwhelming that even though another running event is happening on the same day, we still managed to break our own record,” said Larrazabal III.
“I am very happy that the community trusted us. We have been here for seven years and maybe that’s the reason why a lot of runners want to join our race. This just encourages us to stage more quality races.”
Although bulk of the participants may be CDU students and employees, Larrazabal III said a large percentage are still made up of local runners.
Out-of-town runners from Ormoc and Manila are also expected to join the race.
The highlight of this year’s race is the 25-kilometer three-bridge challenge, which drew in 500 long-distance runners. The race will also have 13k, 6k and 3k distances.
Finishers will bring home a medal while cash prizes will be given to winners in each category. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
