Biazon: Congress wants to know how it can help implement flood control plan

MANILA, Philippines—Muntinlupa Rep. Rodolfo Biazon said Friday he would like Congress to know and determine how it could help fund and implement the proposed P552-billion master flood control plan by the Department of Public Works and Highways.

In an interview over Radyo Inquirer 990 AM, Biazon said the proposed master flood control plan is a big-ticket item and it would help the House of Representatives to know all the details for such a massive project.

Biazon clarified earlier reports about his planned scrutiny on the proposed project, saying his intention was more to ask and be enlightened rather than merely investigate the matter.

He said he and his colleagues would like to know exactly how they could help implement such a huge undertaking and be able to explain well to their constituents what would happen to them if the project pushes through.

Biazon cited the plight of his constituents in Muntinlupa, particularly those living near the Laguna Lake, whose houses and livelihood were affected by the recent floods caused by the southwest monsoon.

He also mentioned the plight of students whose schools have been used as evacuation centers by flood victims. He said the floodwaters in these areas usually recede between two and three months and expressed concern for the students affected by the situation.

“We need a blueprint to enable us to know exactly what we can do, ‘’ Biazon said.

So far, he said, the DPWH has drawn up a list of things to do with regards to the project which, if implemented, is targeted to be finished in 2035.
