Garbage woes pester brgy Guadalupe

/ 07:52 AM August 16, 2012

Barangay Guadalupe continues to struggle with garbage collection and is asking City Hall to replace four  dilapidated garbage trucks.

“We see to it that we collect garbage early, but there are people who throw their garbage late,” said Michael Gacasan, barangay captain of Cebu City’s biggest barangay.

“That is why there is  some garbage left uncollected in the sidewalks.”

The Department of Public Services (DPS), in a briefing the other day, said they tried placing plant boxes made of rubber tires along the sidewalks to Guadalupe church to prevent people from dumping trash by the road.

But after a few days, the  plant boxes  are cleared out and garbage piles reappear. Gacasan, in a separate interview, said he was unaware of this and would look into the matter.

Waste segregation, sorting and composting is  supposed to be done at  the barangay level  to reduce the volume of trash that ends up in the landfill.

But Gacasan said he would ask the City Council to buy more garbage trucks.

“We would like to request three or four more trucks to replace our worn -out units,” he said.

Guadalupe has six  functional garbage trucks left since four are dilapidated, and can’t be used any more, he said. He said 26 personnel are in charge of garbage collection.
