ZAMBOANGA CITY—A soldier was killed during a clash with communist rebels in Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, on Wednesday, the Western Mindanao Command reported.
Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, Westmincom spokesperson, said soldiers under the 53rd Infantry Battalion were conducting combat operation in an area in Compostela village when they encountered about 40 New People’s Army rebels around 2:40 p.m.
Cabangbang said a number of NPA rebels were also killed or wounded during the 30-minute firefight.
