A TWO-STOREY four classroom school building will be turned over to Pakna-an Elementary School in barangay Pakna-an, Mandaue City on Aug. 16.
An agreement for the project was signed between the Mandaue City government and the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) on Friday at the mayor’s office.
Seventy percent of the total project cost was shouldered by Veco, while 30 percent was taken by the city government. The Department of Education takes charge of the building’s maintenance.
Sebastian Lacson, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Veco, said this is the 12th school they built in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) in Cebu and Aboitiz Foundation Inc.
“We have also teams that will monitor the school buildings and if they are found properly maintained, we will come back and give some facilities or equipment to the school,” said Lacson.
Mayor Jonas Cortes thanked Veco for helping address the shortage of classrooms in public schools.
Clarissa Villaver, principal of Pakna-an Elementary School, was thankful that a school building had been built for them. “Kulangan gyud kaayo mi og rooms diri (We are very much in need of classrooms here),” Villaver said. /CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA
