Pinoy chesser ties for 7th in Singapore

FILIPINO pawnpusher Normel de Jesus drew with Singaporean Timothy Ling Jing Sheng in the ninth and final round to tie for seventh place in the 1st ASEAN International Youth Chess Championship 2012 dubbed as 9th Singapore International Chess Festival held last Aug. 6 to 12 at the Nanyang Primary School in Singapore.

De Jesus, playing in the U-17 Open division, had 4.0 points in a four-way tie for seventh. He claimed 8th place honors with a lower tie break score against 7th placer Li Peize of China and edged 9h placer Cameron Yung of Australia and 10th placer placer Arani Akash of Singapore.

Liu Xiangyi of China  (8.5 points out of 9 games) won the gold, Mohammad Agus Kurniawan of Indonesia (7.5 points) took the silver while Jugele Ayush of India (6.0 points) earned bronze. /Correspondent Marlon Bernardino
