Woman, grandson dead in robbery try

A woman and her grandson were killed on Wednesday in Pozorrubio town by a neighbor who had tried to rob them, police said.

Erlinda Bautista, 72, and John Earl Sermese, 6, were stabbed and killed allegedly by Ben Lucban, 40, in their house in Barangay Poblacion II at 3 a.m., said Chief Inspector Satur Ediong, Pozorrubio police chief.

Ediong said Lucban attacked the victims after Bautista was roused from sleep and saw the suspect opening the drawers in her cabinet. Lucban also stabbed Sermese, who was sleeping beside his grandmother.

Bautista’s niece, Josephine Abaoag, 56, who was living in a nearby store, tried to rescue her, but she, too, was stabbed and wounded by Lucban. Abaoag’s husband, Marcelo, grappled with Lucban and eventually disarmed him.

Clerk dismissed; guard suspended

Governor Amado Espino Jr. dismissed a clerk of the provincial government and suspended a jail guard in two separate decisions on the administrative cases filed against them.

Dismissed for grave misconduct was Carmelita Tan, an assessment clerk of the provincial assessor’s office (PAO). Suspended for six months for misconduct was provincial jail guard Marcelo Lopez.

Documents showed that Tan offered “speedy and convenient” transaction to Tessie Cerezo who went to the PAO to process real property documents in exchange for P35,000. It was the second time that Tan was charged for soliciting money from a client in exchange for a promised service. On February 9, she was suspended for 15 days after being found guilty of simple misconduct.

Lopez was found guilty of misconduct for ordering a prisoner, Gilbert Diaz, to stab and kill a fellow inmate, Felipe Quillope, on Jan. 18. Diaz told investigators he had no choice but to do the job because Lopez threatened to harm him and offered him P25,000.  Gabriel Cardinoza, Inquirer Northern Luzon
