Manila, Philippines – While gaining strength over the Pacific Ocean, Typhoon Ineng  (International Name Ma-on) entered the Philippine area of responsibility at 11 a.m. today but is “still too far to affect any part of the country,” the weather bureau said on Sunday.

Aldczar Aurelio, forecaster at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the typhoon was also expected to exit within today as the fast-moving weather system heads for Japan.

It was spotted some 1,240 kms east northeast of Basco Batanes, moving at 24 kph.  The typhoon is estimated to have winds of up to 185 kph and gustiness of 220 kph.

The typhoon is expected to pull the southwest monsoon, and might bring scattered rainshowers over Luzon and the Visayas as it moves closer to Japan when the new week starts, Aurelio said.
