Fire displaces 65 Ormoc City families

/ 08:14 PM August 12, 2012

At least 65 families lost their houses on Friday night due to a fire.

The blaze destroyed at least P10 million worth of property in a residential area on Mabini Street, District 4, Ormoc City, Leyte, said Senior Fire Officer 1 Roel Wenceslao, Chief of Intelligence and Investigation Division of Ormoc Fire Department.

Residents heard an explosion and the sparks flew from an electric post that landed on the house owned by Dominador Cabibi. The house caught fire, which quickly spread to neighboring houses.  Firefighters put the fire under control after three hours since there was no access road leading to the fire scene and most of the houses were made of light materials, he said.

The displaced families were temporarily housed at the gymnasium of Barangay Cogon. Wenceslao said most of the fire victims failed to save any belonging. Elvie Roman-Roa, Inquirer Visayas
