CEBU CITY, Philippines—Three persons died early Monday when their motorcycle slammed into a trailer truck parked along the national highway in Argao, Cebu, the police said.
Killed on the spot were Luisito Cambarijan, 31; Genito Amazona and Silvestre Gomera, all from Sitio Canohoy, Bulasa, Argao.
Police Officer 2 Benjamin Geyrosaga of Argao police said the three riders had just had attended a wake and were on their way home at 1:20 a.m. Monday when the accident occurred in Sitio (sub-village) Candabong.
The motorcycle the three were riding slammed into the back of a parked trailer truck loaded with sand.
The truck driver, Henry Aque of Bais City, said he had parked the truck so he could fix one of the tires. After fixing the tire, Aque said he went returned to the driver’s seat to rest for a while when he heard a loud noise at the rear of the trailer truck.
Aque told police that when he went out of the truck to check, he saw the three victims sprawled on the road.
Another vehicle, a Manila Bulletin delivery van which was heading south, tried to evade the bodies but the van crashed on the roadside and fell on its side, according to the driver, Benito Fuentenegra.
The legs of one of the victims were reportedly trapped under the van.
Aque and Fuentenegra were detained at the Argao police station detention cell.
Another police officer, PO3 Von Tecson, said other motorists on the road claimed that the motorcycle was going so fast and had overtaken them before the accident occurred.
Tecson said they were waiting for the families of the victims to decide if they would file charges against the two drivers.
