Treasurer’s pending exit irks Mayor Rama

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday expressed his frustration about the upcoming transfer of City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva.

He said he did not receive any communication about the transfer.

“Supposedly, when someone is relieved, there should be concurrence of the mayor,” Rama said.

Rama said he is satisfied with the performance of Oliva.

Rep. Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City’s south district would not comment on Oliva’s fate.

“Anything I say will be twisted so I won’t comment on that,” Osmeña told CDN.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña said she is willing to work with any city treasurer now that she is the new chairman of the city’s committee on budget and finance.

Tessie Camarillo will replace Oliva.

“I will need all the help I can get and I hope that when I ask, I will be answered,” Margot said.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to work with (Oliva) directly… but I do know that she knows her job well.”

Margot suggested that staff of the city treasurer give refreshments and magazines to relax taxpayers waiting for their turn to pay.

This is practiced in the United States, she said.

“They are paid to work and not to dance,” Margot said, referring to “dancing tax collectors.”

It was Oliva’s idea to let her staff entertain taxpayers in the office by performing short dance numbers.
