MANILA, Philippines—A spokesman for a fraternity embroiled in the hazing death of San Beda law student Marc Andre Marcos on Friday condemned the practice of hazing, saying the fraternity will cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation.

In a press conference, former Quezon City Councilor Ariel Inton said the Lex Leonum Fraternitas was extending its condolences to the Marcos family.

“We are an exclusive fraternity, we are not underground. We were also surprised by this incident,” Inton said.

Inton said he did not know the whereabouts of the fraternity members linked to Marcos’s death last Monday following fraternity initiation rites the previous day.

In an prepared statement, the law fraternity said it does not believe in the power of force.

“As a fraternity of lawyers we adhere to the rule of law and the principles of due process,” it said.
