10 schools in Iloilo suspend classes

ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Classes in 10 public elementary and high schools in coastal or flood-prone areas Iloilo City were suspended Thursday because of strong winds and heavy rains.

The city’s mayor, Jed Patrick Mabilog, also ordered the suspension of public day-care services in the city.

The schools include the Sto. Nino Elementary School, E. Yusay Elementary School, Calaparan Elementary School, Melchor Nava National High School, Juntado Elementary School, San Juan Elementary School, Fort San Pedro National High School, Bitoon Elementary School, La Paz 1 & 2 Elementary School and L. Borres Elementary School.

These schools are located either on the coast or in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Strong monsoon rains and winds, enhanced by the passage of Typhoon Gener have destroyed at least 41 houses and damaged 156 others in Iloilo City since Monday.
